What to know.
Wooden rafters are timber sections fixed in parallel rows across a ceiling or over an open space. Indoors they give a living room, restaurant or lobby the warmth of exposed timber. Outdoors they form pergolas and verandah roofs that cast striped shade and still let the air through.
We set the spacing and depth of the rafters for the look and the span, use sections treated for sun and rain wherever they are exposed, and fix them to beams or the slab with concealed brackets.
